Tell us about yourself.

E.G. Condé is a Boricua storyteller and artist living in Europe. His novella Sordidez is part of a new genre of indigenous science fiction inspired by Caribbean Antillean traditions and aesthetics called Taínofuturism.  Condé's short fiction explores a range of topics including the future of graffiti, data centers, climate breakdown, and more in venues such as AnalogSF, Future Tense, Interzone, Solarpunk Magazine, Reckoning and more.

What are you bringing into your residency?

I am drawn to Santiago Atitlán  as both a creative and a historian and ethnographer of computing practices. I am particularly interested in learning more about the Cojolya Association of Maya Women Weavers and how their craft and methods connect to indigenous histories of computing. Given the long history of exchange between Maya and Taino peoples in the world before European colonization, I am also drawn to the region seeking inspiration for my indigenous futurist artworks and stories.

What drew you to Casa Ceiba?

Unlike many residencies for artists and practitioners, Casa Ceiba is designed to be an immersive opportunity that fosters pathways for meaningful intercultural exchange in a remote community while also providing space and an atmosphere to kindle creativity. The entire experience is thoughtfully curated to foster a truly transformative experience for participants while also offering something in return to the residents of Santiago Atitlán.
